July 4th Pie Baking Contest

Once again this year, The Baxter Team was asked to judge the Sun City Carolina Lakes Independence Day pie contest.  No, it wasn’t a pie eating contest; it was a pie tasting contest, the difference being you get a bite of many great pies rather than a lot of just one pie.  And pie tasting is a lot neater than pie eating.

Judging pie, however, like judging art, is a matter of taste, so it’s hard to be a fair “judge” if you just don’t like pumpkin pie, regardless of how good it is.  And if you love key lime pie, it doesn’t matter what else is on the table because the key lime has an advantage.  You can see by the photos the intensity of the crowd and that the pies are too pretty to eat.  Oreo Pudding Cream Pie?  Really?  They had Reid at Oreo.

Bottom line:  It’s a tough job being a pie judge, but somebody has to do it.  The Baxter Team looks forward to 2018.  Bring on the pie.
